High-quality designer perfume has always commanded a premium not only for the product itself but also the name on the label. Dossieris one such perfume brand which has made its reputation by proving that the numbers game doesn’t need to come at the cost of quality, evident from two popular fragrances Dossier Woody Green Apple and Dossier's Woody Green Apple.

Woody Green Apple: Inspired by One Million

Taking inspiration from One Million by Paco Rabanne, which was one of the most successful men's fragrances of all time, Woody Green Apple starts off with a burst of green apple, mint and grapefruit notes. These are the same refreshing citrus notes that helped to make the original fragrance so iconic. Next comes cinnamon and a hint of rose, followed by an opulent combination of cedarwood, patchouli and amberwood notes to form a cologne that screams manliness. It is sweet but still very much masculine in tone, with good lasting power — and none of the extortionate cost associated with the original. It can be purchased at around a quarter of the price.

Woody Sandalwood: Inspired by Santal 33

At the other extreme of the scale is Woody Sandalwood by Dossier, which is Inspired by Santal 33 from Le Labo that has earned a cult status and is beloved for its gender-neutral scent. Woody Sandalwood opens with Violet Leaves and Cardamom, progresses through iris, ambrox, cedarwood, and cypress before reaching the musky, creamy base notes of sandalwood and amber. Like the original it has been formulated as Unisex Eau de Parfum (EDP) which is meant to be worn close to the skin just like the original is – smoky, woody and slightly addictive but never overpowering. This is probably one of the best Le Labo Santal 33 dupes around today.

What Both Scents Have in Common

Although the scents are miles away from each other — one floral and spicy, another one woody and skin-like — both fragrances are united by the principles that are characteristic for the Dossier line. Each scent uses only Clean formula with no parabens, phthalates, UV filters, or artificial colorants; every bottle is vegan and cruelty-free, PETA-certified and manufactured in Grasse, France, the traditional capital of perfume. They both come in a standard 1.7 oz (50ml) bottle and provide several months of use at an affordable price that is out of question for designer brands.

Why This Works

The expanded market reach of the Dossier formula is obvious: in lieu of paying for a star's face, a marketing effort, or legacy built up over many years, one is instead paying for just about all of the fragrance oil. This is why Woody Green Apple can be sold for only $29, competing against the likes of a $129 One Million bottle and Woody Sandalwood can serve as an alternative to a $200-plus Santal 33.

The Bottom Line

Whether you prefer the energetic and playful attitude of Woody Green Apple or the smokiness of Woody Sandalwood, both fragrances show that you don't have to pay the price of luxury for great perfumery.
